I think the people making ageist jokes about John McCain, racist jokes about Barak Obama, and sexist jokes about Hillary Clinton should stand in front of a crowd where ignorant fools are allowed to make fun of them.
I think the cat’s attention to the fern means she will soon be leaving me a ferny gift [...]

I love the cool of early morning,
I love the way water falls from a cliff,
I love the cry of a hawk.
I love the pictures in children’s books,
I love songs from musical theater,
I love the complexity of a good enchilada.
I love the scrubbed faces of kids,
I love the round bloom of a white daisy,

Dinner

Picture dinner with friends in a restaurant. Are you the type who wants to linger in conversation long after the table has been cleared of food, dessert and coffee? Or are you the type who wants to eat and get moving?

Alice

I just read the Neville Shute novel A Town Like Alice. I didn’t read it years ago when it first came out, although I remember loving the TV movie based on it. It’s a lovely story, gently told. My book club read On the Beach last year, and we’re continuing with Neville Shute this year. [...]

I spent the weekend climbing the rocks and ladders at Mesa Verde National Park, showing the cliff dwellings to the grandkids. In the years since going there with the kids, or since going there as a kid myself, things have changed. More people visiting have forced the park service to regulate tourists by limiting tours [...]
