Kittens

It was my usual walk along the arroyo, a track filled with rabbits and roadrunners on a normal day. But today I saw something ahead of me that moved in an odd way. I was wary at first, because I couldn’t tell what it was. As I drew closer I realize it was a pillow case filled with something alive. Then I heard the mewing. A sack of kittens. I untied the string and looked in. Five tiny faces looked up at me.

When I left work the box was still there, just sitting in the driveway. Someone had carelessly entombed it with masking tape. Also, on the front door an envelope sagged and hung with an unintelligible inscription. The house usually bustled with late-night illicit activity, but tonight nothing.

There is a heartless unfeeling cruel person somewhere~Hiding~A cat-lover who loved a kitten, then fed and loved the cat~Then couldn’t find love for her babies~I discovered a cardboard box on my doorstep~Warily I approached, then there was a movement as two beautiful kitten faces popped up~I knew I was lost.
