Silkies

Seal
Silkies are seals who can shed their skin and walk the earth as women. If they want, they can slip back into their sealskin and become water creatures again. I saw The Secret of Roan Inish, a favorite movie, in which the skin literally looked like a seal that you had to climb into like a tight dress. That seemed reasonable as a viewer. Then I saw Lost Girl, where the sealskin was just a hunk of folded fur that you clutched next to yourself as you entered the ocean. That doesn’t seem reasonable as a viewer. I’m willing to make allowances – willing suspension of disbelief and all that – but at least make it sensible, people.

  1. She giggled as her toe touched the water. Their ignorance made her game more fun. She fawned, she preened, she blinded them. They had no idea! Then she took what she wanted. Wrapping the stole around her silkie shoulders, she dove back into the ocean.
