He said

When you write dialog, what verb do you use to indicate the speaker. Does a simple “he said” or “she said” do it for you? Or do you like to describe things: “she said through gritted teeth,” or “he smiled and said?” Do you get into verbs like “he yipped” or “she purred?” Maybe it just depends – are there ever any rules in writing that apply every single time?
