In her own house, her husband had been watching CNN all day in a state of outrage about some piece of news. Next door, she could hear Ralph watching Fox News and she was sure that Ralph would be in a state of outrage about some other piece of news. She dug peacefully in the garden, picked several ripe tomatoes, and went for a walk. It was a beautiful day.

  1. She sat on the edge of the sofa. Her hands were so tightly clasped, her knuckles were white. Damn commercial! When the news came back on, they would talk about flight 823. Were there any victims? More importantly, was HER mother one of them? She bit her bottom lip. She was 32 weeks pregnant and she desperately wanted Mom around for her child.

  2. Talking heads. Form, no substance. I can’t even look anymore. So I read. When I read the news I can choose the medium, the content and I never have to adjust the volume. Words. In print. Vocabulary, syntax, voice. There’s beauty in the written word. Even when its news.

  3. Bad news travels fast as we all know. Good news, on the other hand, well, that’s a different story. When you turn on the TV, all you hear is bad news. A good news channel should be created so that we may also be made aware of the good things that are also happening around us (e.g., philanthropic contributions toward a good cause, scientific advancements to improve health, people who distinguish themselves in striving toward peace, educational advancement, etc., etc.). Maybe it’s a far-fetched idea, but I think we can benefit from it and be able to maintain some balance in our lives.
