We called her Grasshopper because she outpaced us by two. She’d get where we were going, look around, come back to fetch us and go again with the slowpokes. She’d rush off on side trips to see things we’d miss and rejoin us down the path a few minutes later. I was convinced she had twice as much fun as anyone else.

  1. Rich was Kevin’s dad. He was a roustabout in the Central California oil fields- an entry level laborer who was called upon to do every filthy, putrid job imaginable. Need someone to dig a hole? Call Rich. Need an animal carcass hauled away? Call Rich. Need a leaky oil line repaired? Call Rich. Most of the roustabout crew grumbled, some none too quietly, about their status – not Rich. He approached every task like it was Christmas morning, willing to help and eager to learn. One afternoon, the shift supervisor called the crew over to Grasshopper 26, the largest oil pumping rig in their sector. When the group had gathered around he announced that today was promotion day, someone was moving from roustabout to apprentice pipefitter….
