Quick! Best getaway for someone who lives in the desert? It has to involve green plants in abundance and lots of water.
The coast of France came up, Florida was suggested, one person thought Oregon was a good idea. Nearby mountain lakes made the list. It all sounded wonderful. And expensive. So I spent my weekend in a lawn chair fishing under some cottonwoods near the river.

Remember the 1972 film “The Getaway” starring Ali McGraw and Steve McQueen? He was one of my favorite actors who, definitely, epitomized the meaning of the word “cool.”
Her getaway was an all-night cafe on the rougher side of town. She sat in a discreet corner with her back to the wall. She’d come to know the regulars a bit so felt safe enough. Besides that she carried a concealed Cold M1911 .45 caliber pistol in a slide pocket in the handbag on her lap. It’s name was Audie Murphy and he gave her great comfort.
