What’s the plan?

“What’s the plan?” I asked.

“Nothing is set in stone yet, but it looks like we’ll leave around noon. That should put us in Colorado before dark.”

“Have you checked the weather?”

“No. Have you?”

“Yeah, a blizzard is forecast.”

“Oh. We should discuss plan B.”

“What’s plan B?”

“Staying home.”

  1. Stay home? I know that seems like wisdom, but I would be so disappointed about missing out. Everyone has been so excited about this gathering and we have already purchased all the supplies. Although we would miss the scenery, perhaps we can get everyone to travel this direction and we could host. Are you up for this? Here’s your Santa suit.

  2. “Hey ! Happy birthday ! ”
    ” Thanks ”
“So, what’s the plan for today ? cake , party?”
“No! Umm , no plans . I am just staying put . Keeping it low key , you know , it is that time of the year …..” She trailed off in a whisper . I could hear her smile fade away . I actually could . The sadness was so audible .
“Oh Ok ! Sorry , I forgot .” I thought why prolong the conversation anyway .
“No , no wait .” Her voice ran after me , chasing the only sliver of sunshine that morning .
“You could come over . And then ..” I could almost feel her pleading . Why was she pleading ? Had it come down to that ? She needed me . I was the only one who could pull her out of the morass of depression she was sinking herself into .
He was gone . Years ago . Why did she have to mourn him for that entire month , specially , as her birthday was in that month .
I quickly set the stove to 180 degrees , timer at 45 min . I had to bake a cake for her. A light , fluffy , chocolate cake with walnuts , just the way she liked it . Now where was cocoa powder ?
