He used one-liners from movies for everything. It was as if he never had an original thought, but could only regurgitate things he’d memorized. The strange thing was, it was always appropriate. It always worked in the context where he used it. He could learn the entire dialog from a movie in just one viewing. I once asked him if he didn’t start talking until he was old enough to watch movies, but his response was a line from War of the Worlds.

Don’t you love the early bird matinee? If you go to a movie at 11 AM or noon, you can save a quarter on the admission price. Sunday at my local multiplex the early bird matinee for “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” was absolutely crammed. Everyone was old like me. It looked like they bused in every senior citizens in Albuquerque for the show. We all recognized everyone in the story, laughed, cried, and applauded at the end in a way that younger people wouldn’t understand. You cannot make me believe that all elders are ultra conservative right wing voters. The emotion in that theater was not right wing.

Silkies are seals who can shed their skin and walk the earth as women. If they want, they can slip back into their sealskin and become water creatures again. I saw The Secret of Roan Inish, a favorite movie, in which the skin literally looked like a seal that you had to climb into like a tight dress. That seemed reasonable as a viewer. Then I saw Lost Girl, where the sealskin was just a hunk of folded fur that you clutched next to yourself as you entered the ocean. That doesn’t seem reasonable as a viewer. I’m willing to make allowances – willing suspension of disbelief and all that – but at least make it sensible, people.

I entered the theater to watch “Much Ado About Nothing” and turned off the ringer on my phone. I stuffed the phone in my purse. A couple of hours later I dug it out to turn the ringer on. It was boiling hot. The battery was almost gone. I couldn’t see that the phone had been doing anything, but obviously it was. Perhaps it recorded Nathan Fillian saying “I’m an ass” 10 times. That would be a fun ringtone.

May I recommend the delightful movie Robot & Frank for your viewing pleasure. Frank is a retired second story man who suffers from Alzheimer’s. His son gets him a health care aide who is a robot. If you are sick of the horrifying movies that are so popular today, you will love this charming and sensitive story.

Down at the multiplex today, every movie ever made is showing, for one day only. The one I urge you to go see is “The Secret of Roan Inish.” Irish mythology, no violence, a beautiful story. Yep. Go see it.

The first lady of the United States presented the Oscar for best picture last night at the Oscars. She talked about how important the art and artists in Hollywood are to the country and the world. You know what? What she said is true for all artists: writers, visual artists, musicians and every other creative individual. Tell your stories. Write.

I love the movies. Movies have been hallmarks in my life, built my cultural background, provided thrills and joy, provoked thought, ignited discussion, and given me many a reusable line of dialog to apply in life’s daily situations. Yet, when I listen to the list of movies nominated for best picture this year, I realize I’ve been slacking on making it out to the multiplex. If I see an Oscar nominated picture on Netflix months after it came out, that doesn’t bother me. I remember a time when I made a big effort to see them all before any awards were given.

I’m going with Brave’s Medira. She has her own agenda and isn’t interested in the usual Disney princess girly stuff. That makes her admirable in my book. That makes her an independent minded creator of her own life. Not too bad for a princess.

I called my sister while standing in front of the art house theater, reading the list of upcoming movies. It was 17 degrees in the sun, and I was in the shade. I clutched my arms to my sides for warmth while I waited for her to pick up.
“Hello,” she said.
“It’s on at the art house starting next weekend,” I said. I heard her quick intake of breath. “I’ll have to cancel some things,” she said.
